Kenji Fusé, Our Director

The Strathcona Symphony Orchestra is honoured to present Kenji Fusé as the new Music Director. His expertise as a violist, conductor, educator, and composer will undoubtedly bring the SSO orchestra to another exciting musical performance level for Comox Valley and Campbell River audiences to enjoy.

Kenji has been a long-time Principal Viola with the Victoria Symphony.  He has also performed with many of the world’s greatest and most successful musical artists, including Yo-Yo Ma, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Celine Dion, Rosemary Clooney, James Ehnes, Nelly Furtado, and Angela Hewitt, as well as with the Vancouver Symphony, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Toronto Chamber Players, Muse Ensemble (the resident group of the very popular Eine Kleine Summer Music festival) and the Scotia Fest Orchestra, under conductors ranging from Pierre Boulez to Carl Davis.

He has taught music at the University of Victoria, the Victoria Conservatory of Music, CYMC, and coaches the viola section of the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra.

Kenji has debuted many new works, including his own viola concert conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin. He has also given the debut performances of many Canadian works, including the BC debut of the Jacques Hétu viola concerto. He has also received awards and prizes from the Canada Council, the BC Arts Council, the CBC, the Banff Centre for the Arts, and the Kiwanis Festival.

Kenji was the conductor of the ArtFarm ensemble, conducting a fully-staged performance of Stravinsky’s A Soldier’s Tale, as part of the Victoria Symphony’s Cathedral Fest. He also directed the Metapop Ensemble at their residency at Logan’s Tavern, which specialized in improvisatory music.
